IDF in Syria: Seven villages, two brigades and winter preparations beyond the border
In a historic operation, IDF forces captured key sectors in the buffer zone beyond the Syrian border. Seven villages have now come under IDF protection, with troops from the Paratroopers Brigade, 188th Armored Brigade, and Commando Brigade leading the effort. The capture occurred without resistance, as Syrian forces abandoned posts and retreated.
To ensure long-term security, the IDF is building engineering defenses, including trenches, earth embankments, and reinforced minefields, complementing Israel’s existing high-tech border fence. Portable quarters and generators were supplied to troops ahead of winter.
Local villagers, relieved by the fall of Assad's regime, continue daily life, cultivating land and interacting with IDF soldiers. Despite the calm, IDF soldiers remain vigilant against potential threats, including pro-Iranian Shiite militias and Sunni jihadists. The IDF expects its presence in the area to last up to a year or until political solutions emerge. Brig. Gen. Yair Paley emphasized their mission to defend Israel’s citizens and maintain regional stability.
