Reviving Jewish folk tunes that were nearly lost forever
Between 1928 and 1938, Soviet-Jewish musicologist Sofia Magid recorded Jewish folk music across regions now known as Belarus and Ukraine.
These recordings, capturing instrumental tunes, Yiddish songs, and Hebrew chants, faced potential oblivion due to the Holocaust.
Music scholar Zisl Slepovitch has since transcribed these recordings, publishing "Musical Treasures from Sofia Magid’s Jewish Collection" in late 2024.
This work allows contemporary musicians to access and perform these nearly lost tunes, ensuring the preservation and revival of a rich musical heritage.
