Obituary: Holocaust survivor George Summerfield dies aged 91
George Summerfield, a Holocaust survivor who fled Berlin as a child, passed away on March 31 at the age of 91. Born Heinz Günther Sommerfeld in June 1933, George and his twin brother Peter escaped Nazi Germany with their family in 1939, aided by a non-Jewish caretaker.
The family was welcomed in London by the Central British Fund, later World Jewish Relief. Their early years in England were turbulent, marked by internment of their father and frequent air raids, forcing them to shelter nightly in the Tube. George and Peter attended local schools and later received scholarships to Oxford.
After National Service in Egypt and Malta, George pursued law, then transitioned into tourism, education, and psychology, co-founding Career Analysts. He was multilingual, deeply inclusive, and known for fostering diversity long before it became common practice.
George had a passion for music and performance, which began in childhood and extended to community events and entertaining troops. He married Giselle, with whom he had two children, and later remarried Marion after Giselle’s passing.
In his later years, George dedicated himself to Holocaust education, sharing his story widely. His life was commemorated in the BBC series “Saved by a Stranger.” He is survived by Peter, his children, and four grandchildren.
