Culture in Their Hands: Students Shape Exhibition of Jewish-Inspired Objects

The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia is showcasing "Between Hand and Scroll: Torah Pointers From the Barr Collection," an exhibition featuring intricate Torah pointers, known as "yads."

These tools guide readers during public Torah readings. Sixteen UVA students from the Curating Culture course, led by Professor Lise Dobrin and Assistant Professor Wendy Ligon Smith, played a pivotal role in curating this display.

The course delved into curatorial principles, emphasizing the cultural context of artifacts. Students engaged in various activities, including writing museum text, researching the origins of yads, designing interactive booklets for children, and exploring Jewish ritual practices.

The exhibition is open at The Fralin until the end of July.
