New Exhibit Opening: "Henna, Love, and Light: Jewish Life and Art in Siona Benjamin’s India"
Fordham University's Walsh Family Library is hosting an exhibition titled "Henna, Love, and Light: Jewish Life and Art in Siona Benjamin’s India," running from January 30 to March 28, 2025. The exhibit showcases pieces from Siona Benjamin's series "Faces: Weaving Indian Jewish Narratives," reflecting the rich tapestry of Indian Jewish identity.
Central to the exhibition are photographs taken in the 1950s by Benjamin's parents, Judah and Sophie Benjamin, who documented synagogues and prayer houses across India. These images capture the diversity of the Indian Jewish community, from grand urban synagogues to modest rural prayer halls. The collection highlights the seamless blend of Indian and Jewish cultures, illustrating traditions like henna and sari adornments alongside modern attire.
Curated by Amy Levine-Kennedy, Mallory Roof (FCRH '26), and Magda Teter, the exhibit offers a unique insight into a vibrant aspect of Jewish history, now at risk of fading into obscurity.
